Akan Language
The term “Akan” refers to a cluster of dialects and languages within the Kwa Branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Principle members include Akuapem, Asante (Ashanti), Brong (Abron), and Fante (Fanti).
The Akan dialects and languages are spoken primarily in Ghana and Suriname. Speakers of Akan languages number more than 7 million in total.
The Akan orthography, as assembled by the Bureau of Ghanaian Languages, currently consists of 20,000 words.
