Latin Language
Latin (Lingua Latin) is an Indo-European language that belongs to the Italic group. It is the ancestor of the modern Romance Languages.
The modern Romance languages originated from spoken Latin in different parts of the Roman Empire. Throughout the middle ages and until the 20th century, Latin was the most widely used language for scholarly and literary purposes in the Western World.
Until the late 20th century, use of Latin was required in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church.
