Bahasa (Indonesian) is the native tongue of more than 250 million people in the region of Southeast Asia. It is the official language of Indonesia. Bahasa (Indonesian) is a dialect descended from the language of Malay. It was officially defined as its own language after Indonesia declared its independence in 1945. Indonesian is also spoken in East Timor, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Caledonia, Singapore, Southern Philippines, Southern Thailand, and Suriname.
