Sranan Language
Sranan (also called Sranan Tongo, Taki-taki, Sranantonga, or Ningre-tongo) is a Creole language spoken in Suriname in northeast South America. It is also spoken in Aruba, the Netherlands, and the Netherlands Antilles. Sranan had more than 126,000 native speakers in the late 20th century.
Sranan began as a pidgin language based on English. It was spoken by African slaves who worked on plantations in Suriname. Therefore, Sranan has been strongly influenced by African languages. Sranan has also been influenced by Portuguese.
