Khmer Language
Khmer (also called Cambodian) is the official language of Cambodia.
Khmer is spoken by the majority of the population of Cambodia. It is also spoken by more than a million people in southern Vietnam, and by approximately 1.3 million people in southeastern Thailand.
Modern written Khmer uses a script that originated in South India. Furthermore, much of the modern Khmer vocabulary borrows from Pali and Sanskrit languages.
Modern Khmer derives from a language known as Old Khmer, which was spoken in the ancient Khmer empire.
The Khmer language’s lasting influence on other regional languages is evident from the numerous Khmer loanwords found in Cham, Kuay, Lao, Samre, Stieng, and Thai vocabularies.
